WE HAVE MOVED! SAME BUILDING, DIFFERENT WING (with RFLA) NEW ADDRESS: Unit G1 – 310 Bridge St. West
A bronchoscopy is a procedure that allows doctors to look inside the lungs and airways using a thin, flexible camera called a bronchoscope. This is inserted through the mouth after receiving medications to make you sleepy.
During the procedure, your doctor may perform tests such as bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL), where fluid is gently washed into part of the lung and then collected; brushings, which collect cells from the airway lining; and biopsies, which remove small pieces of tissue for analysis.
Potential complications include coughing, bleeding, low grade fever, or sore throat. Rare risks include pneumothorax (collapsed lung), chest infection, severe bleeding, or severe respiratory compromise requiring admission to hospital.
The procedure takes about 1 hour (although you should expect to stay in hospital for 4 hours) and you will be able to go home the same day.
Dr. Yang performs bronchoscopy examinations at Kingston General Hospital (KGH). If the medical plan you and Dr. Yang have agree upon includes undergoing a bronchoscopy, you will receive a phone call to book this procedure along with further information. Please note the procedure will be performed by Dr. Yang or another Respirologist at Queen’s University. Given that KGH is a teaching hospital, resident doctors may be assisting during the bronchoscopy.
For the bronchoscopy, it is important to:
Stop eating and drinking starting at midnight the evening before the bronchoscopy (Note: sips of water with medications are permitted)
Follow Dr. Yang’s instructions about stopping certain medications (if applicable) prior to the procedure (e.g. blood thinners)
Arrange for someone to pick you up after the bronchoscopy (you cannot drive as you will be too sleepy)
Ensure someone will stay with you at home for at least 12 hours after the bronchoscopy (to make sure you are not having issues)
Follow-up with be arranged by Dr. Yang's office after the bronchoscopy is completed
